History- The English language is
predominantly a Germanic language that has its roots in the Anglo-Frisian
dialects. It was brought to Britain by the Germanic invaders and uses terms
much unlike other European languages that sprung in the same era. To categorize
its era of developments, English is divided into three categories i.e. Old
English, Middle English and Modern English. Old English dates back to the mid 5th
Century to the mid 11th Century, Middle English dates to the late 11th
Century to the late 15th Century and finally Modern English which
dates from the late 17th Century to present. The English popularly
used today is Modern English. There are various colloquialisms that exist and
they differ from region to region. For example, the English of the USA is different
from that of the UK.
Popularity-
English is the second most popular
language in the world with the total number of people coming to a staggering
508 million. While English may not have the maximum number of speakers, it is
the official language of most countries in the world.
Countries- English is the official language of
New Zealand, US, Canada, Australia, the UK, Hong Kong and South Africa.
Careers- Equipped with the English language,
there are a number of careers waiting for our young aspirants. Since English is
the most widely spoken language, mass communications and media have a large
scope. There are professions needing linguistic expertise such as speech
development, education such as teaching in schools, language institutes etc and
not to forget news channels. Even foreign language channels such as Al-Jazeera

to reach a global media.
